How can Hollywood impact marriage?
In The State of Our Unions Marriage in America, it provides a marriage agenda to our local and national leaders. It states, “These proposals for federal and state policies and cultural change include eliminating marriage penalties and disincentives for the poor, for unwed mothers, and for older Americans; tripling the child tax credit; helping young men to become marriageable men; ending anonymous fatherhood; preventing unnecessary divorce; providing marriage education for newly-forming stepfamilies; investing in and evaluating marriage and relationship education programs; engaging Hollywood; launching social media campaigns about the facts and fun of marriage; and modeling how to talk about our shared marriage values despite our differences.”
From this list of proposals I found two parts very interesting, helping young men to become marriageable men and engaging Hollywood. The attitude about marriage and family in teenagers has remained high and is important over the years. Also teens have become more accepting of alternative lifestyles. This is when I wanted to see a correlation to helping young men to become marriageable men and engaging Hollywood. I believe Hollywood has an astounding effect on teens and young adults. Hollywood has an opportunity, through television, movies, radio, music, news, sports, etc., to enter into our homes and show an example of what a husband and father can do individually, for families, socially, within communities, and in the workforce. Hollywood has a chance to inspire young men to be better husbands, and show women how a positive role model effects their lives and children’s lives. This agenda proposes ways to help young men become marriageable men such as providing apprenticeships to master occupational skills, the military reaching out to help singles and possibly children they may already have, the criminal justice system to help those involved in minor crimes to receive relationship education to provide hope for a good marriage. All of these efforts could be magnified if Hollywood would use their power to benefit it’s youth and young adults not only prepare for a good marriage but to see how much joy can come from those happy marriages.
